Dr. Sarah Cairns

Licensed Psychologist, EMDR Trainer, EMDRIA approved Consultant, EMDR Certified

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest gave me a desire to explore warm places. At the first chance I had, I moved to Las Cruces, NM, sight unseen to attend university. During university I studied Women’s Studies and developed a passion for those whom are oppressed, underrepresented, and all too often overlooked. When I had completed my degree I was given the opportunity to work with adolescent girls whom had been taken from their families, in a residential facility. During my time there, I was able to connect with these amazing people through the use of non-conventional avenues; gardening, movement activities, and self advocacy. The growth, that I witnessed in these young women changed my perspective on healing, inspiring me to enter a profession where I walk beside those who seek healing and growth in their lives.

This journey led me back to the Pacific Northwest for a farewell tour, where I attended university to become a psychologist. While in school, I had the opportunity to work in community mental health, sliding scale private practice, and the university counseling settings. I have had the privilege of working with a variety of different people with unique struggles. Now, as a psychologist, I return to the Southwest and bid the rain ado.

One of my favorite quotes that I find important in my work:

“Now I realize that there is no righteous path, it’s just people trying to do their best in a world where it is far too easy to do their worst.”

(Castiel, Supernatural)

Therapeutic Approach

I try to create a safe and empathetic therapeutic space for clients. I work from a person-centered approach, believing that each client is unique and is able and capable of guiding their own process. I am trained in and most often utilize EMDR and always incorporate the strengths of the client as therapeutic resources and tools. I wholly believe in the power of humor to heal.

I believe that each person is a unique individual and the therapeutic process should reflect that. I view therapy as a collaborative process, much as a coach and an athlete; each plays an important and specific role in achieving success and reaching goals.
